Cuban Modern Dance

The Cuban modern dance technique is a powerful exploration of Afro-Cuban movement fused with Western modern and contemporary dance. In this class, we will explore the primary elements of the technique, including: respiration, contraction/release, undulation, spirals, and opposition. We will explore both center and floor work through basic exercises which we will eventually build into more complex and longer phrases. This class will follow the structure of the first year curriculum that is taught at the National School of Dance (ENA) in Havana, Cuba.

Teacher Mychal A. Bryan is a Bahamian-Jamaican Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT), movement therapist, and dance teacher. He studied in Santiago, Cuba with Teatro de la Danza del Caribe — one of the countries leading dance companies — and was an apprentice to the company’s artistic director. He later moved to Havana, Cuba to deepen his study and research of the Cuban modern dance technique at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA), where he studied and trained with some of the leading pioneers in Cuban modern dance today. He merges his understanding of anatomy, physiology, Iyengar Yoga, and dance, ensuring that each class is a dynamic exploration of the movement potential of the body.
